Hilde Lotz-Bauer ’s evocative image of lacemaker Evelina di Rocco, captured around 1937, features in an unusual exhibition in the mountain town of Scanno, high up in the Abruzzo mountains of central Italy.

Scanno’s lacemaking tradition, practised by its women, uses ancient patterns and designs which are also used in local hand-made gold and silver jewelry. It takes extraordinary skill to make bobbin lace, examples of which are on display in the local church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli.

The exhibition is sponsored by the EU’s Erasmus+ project following initiatives by Scanno town council and L’Arte del Tombolo a Scanno (Bobbin Art in Scanno).

Bobbin lacemakers throughout Italy and further afield currently share their talent on a 1,300-member Facebook group, organised by Maria Antonietta Mancini.

Il Tempo nella Trama runs until 19 September 2021 in the church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli in Piazza San Rocco.
